It’s great to be back with our meet the team series and what better way to get back in the swing of things than with this gem of a host. A decent escape room is nothing without an epic escape game host and, while it does seem to be a male dominated occupation, Sam Smallwood is one of our most popular female hosts. So feminine in fact she’s a bonafide Mermaid and fairy in her spare time. Read on to find out more about Sam and what it takes to be ‘part of that world’.
I had been working with fellow escape room hosts Sam, Jason, Gemma and Kevin for several years at Bunker 51 and has been told told on numerous occasions that I should audition to be a member of the team. I eventually did and nearly two years later I’m still here and loving it!
Not really. I had only ever heard about the Crystal Maze, so you could say it was a ‘whole new world’ and a ‘new fantastic point of view’ for me. Little Mermaid reference essential.
I adore the creepiness of Lady Chastity and I love the victorian costumes. The role was original created for a man, but I bring my own feminine energy to the character. Besides us girls can take the intensity to a whole new level.
I love my job. I love the freedom you get with the script writing, costume and overall performance. Over the last two years my Gabriel has gone from being a creepy librarian to a Victorian dominatrix.
I think the funniest experiences was a young chap who once got so excited about finding a particular clue…. “Guys come here I’ve found something. IDI OT what is IDI OT?… No James that says IDIOT!
I became a mermaid performer back in 2011 after being an extra in Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides. I saw the mermaids and thought it would be an amazing idea for pool parties.
I have since been in two films, and performed at some of the most lavish venues in London. As well as a million and one kids parties.
I made a pact with the sea witch and I get legs when I need to. I often find I have to don my human disguise more often than not.
I have several human jobs because I need to make what you call money. Apparently sand dollars are not a legitimate means of trade!
I make costumes and trinkets for other mermaid performers. I make silicone mermaid tails and tops. I do all of this with my little business on the side called MerBay Studios.
They are really fun and never what you expect. Try it!
I’d love to see Eva Green as a Crystal Maze host. She’s so mysterious. Major girl crush!
I’m hoping to land some fly on acts on cruise ships as a mermaid. If not spend a bit more time in the sunny Florida Keys and some time flipping my fins in the ocean.
Wow, Sam sounds flipping awesome right? Better swim on down to one of our escape rooms to see if you perchance bump into this magical creature. Want to meet more of our illustrious hosts? You can read them all in our meet the team series of blogs.
